Social Entrepreneurship

THRIVE Appalachia youth learn about social entrepreneurship through hands-on projects that create income for both our local farmers as well as into the pockets of local teens. We have two current social entrepreneurship projects and a third in the works.

All proceeds from the sales of both of these projects go to THRIVE'S youth who are saving money toward life-changing goals including college tuition, cars, or capital to start their own business. Both projects support existing local produce, fiber farmers, and help cultivate future farmers.

Kid's Cafe

This year THRIVE Applachia is delighted to partner with both Tractor Food and Farm and Reconciliation House on our Jam n’ Pie Project. Tractor is donating local seasonal fruit from July to November. In the Reconciliation House commercial kitchen, youth are making pies (and soon jams as well!) and then selling them weekly on the Tractor CSA website. This program is made possible by a generous grant from Mountain Air Community Fund.

Learning in Action

    Appalachian Good Wool Project

THRIVE Appalachia is thrilled to be partnering with sheep and alpaca farmers in our local fibershed, including Wellspring Farm (Burnsville, NC), Jane Sawyer (Black Mountain, NC), and Knolveston Farm (Spruce Pine, NC). Learning Shack purchased wool from these local farmers and is having it processed at Green Mountain Spinnery into their signature boiled wool fabric. Teens will sew the fabric into upscale boiled wool jackets and hand-forge penannular brooches in our blacksmithing class as a clasp. This project is made possible by a generous Creating New Economies Fund (CNEF) grant from The Conservation Fund’s Resourceful Communities program.
